About Canadian Immigration

Canada has long been a choice destination for immigrants looking to forge a better life for themselves. The first major influx of immigrants occurred in the 1500s and 1600s when European settlers, primarily from England and France, established colonies. Today, Canada welcomes over 250,000 new permanent residents per year. By country of origin, the highest numbers of new immigrants come from China, India, Pakistan, U.S.A., United Kingdom, Iran, South Korea, Colombia and Sri Lanka.

Since Canada is a relatively young country, the majority of Canadian citizens and permanent residents identify with a culture or ethnicity other than strictly “Canadian.” With a name deriving from an aboriginal word for “village,” Canada certainly feels like one big community of immigrants. Canadian culture is often referred to as a mosaic; newcomers to Canada integrate rather than assimilate. Officially bilingual (with French and English as the national languages) and multicultural, Canada is a country that respects and appreciates the cultural diversity that new immigrants bring to the society.

Canada has a lot to offer new residents – in 2009, the United Nations ranked Canada as the 4th most livable country in the world, behind only Norway; Australia and Iceland, according to its Human Development Index. This rating is based on Canada’s excellent quality of life, and takes into consideration life expectancy rates, education levels and personal income. This means Canadians enjoy a comfortable standard of living, good health care, social security, a high level of education, and a safe and clean environment. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms entrenched in the Canadian constitution guarantees such fundamental rights as equality, mobility and legal rights, as well as freedom of speech, assembly and association.

Safety / Security / Environment

According to a report from Statistics Canada of July 2012, the rate of crimes reported to Canadian police forces reached its lowest level in 40 years in 2011.  “Overall, this marked the eighth consecutive decrease in Canada’s crime rate,” the study said. “Since peaking in 1991, the crime rate has generally been decreasing, and is now at its lowest point since 1972.

Natural Resources Canada has reported that Canada has 10 percent of the world’s forests.  As well, in 2010, Canada ranked first as the world producer of newsprint, contributing 4.6 million tonnes to, or 13.6 percent of, the world’s production.

According to Natural Resources Canada, Canada also has a vast and diversified portfolio of energy resources. Taking advantage of this endowment, Canada produces large quantities of energy for both domestic consumption and export. It is also an energy-intensive country, given its northern climate, vast territory, industrial base and high standard of living.  Canada is an open economy, and taking advantage of its sizeable energy resources, it has become an important and reliable energy provider to the world.

Business Immigration

Canada’s Business Immigration Program seeks to promote economic development and employment by attracting people with venture capital, business acumen and entrepreneurial skills. The government of Canada believes that the selection and admission of new business immigrants benefit both the economy and society.

Canada welcomes successful business people, who have the ability and resources to invest in or establish businesses in Canada, seeking new opportunities and challenges. The Business Immigration Program is designed to encourage and facilitate the admission of these individuals. In addition to providing excellent business opportunities, both the federal and provincial/territorial governments welcome business immigrants and offer services to help immigrants start a business and settle in Canada.

Skilled workers / Professionals

The overall skill level of Canada’s workforce ranks high among competing countries. Canada’s technological infrastructure is second only to the U.S. among the G-7 member nations.

Canada has weathered the recent global economic crisis well, with an unemployment rate of about 6.5% to 7%. Canada is your professional future! According to sources from the Canadian government, 10 to 15 years from now, Canada will depend mostly on the inflow of immigration to maintain the working force in the country.

According to an article in the “La Presse” newspaper dated January 28, 2015, Philippe Couillard, the Premier of Quebec, has reiterated that after the caucus meeting, Quebec needs immigrants. He mentioned that if Quebec wants to avoid a decline of its population of working age, composed of 20 to 64 years, between 2017 and 2030,  Quebec should aim for a threshold of 60 000 immigrants per year and not of 50,000, according to the Statistics Institute of Quebec. The province also needs immigrants to maintain its demographic weight within Canada.

According to Martin Rochette, Editor of the “Palmarès des carriers” on its 11th edition, more than 700,000 positions will be available in Quebec by 2017.  He mentioned that Quebec is arriving at the peak of retirements of the baby boomers and the index of labor replacement in 2016 will of 60 young people for 100 people aged 60 to 64 years. According to him, the job market has never been as open to young people, provided they have a degree.
